Welcome! Volunteers from Carolina’s Medical Center – Main in Charlotte, North Carolina are proud to announce our involvement with international outreach. We will be sending a multidisciplinary team consisting of speech, occupational and physical therapists to Antigua, Guatemala to volunteer our services at Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro.
Our main objectives for this trip are to provide physical/occupational/speech therapy to children and adults diagnosed with a variety of neurological impairments and diseases such as cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, developmental delay, and physical and chronic-degenerative problems. Additionally, we will be participating in teaching activities, transmitting best practice to the Guatemalan staff. We also aim to develop working knowledge of cultural differences and understand how these differences can affect one’s experience with healthcare services.
Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro is an apolitical, non-governmental health and education institution. Its objective is to provide medical, educational, spiritual, moral, and social assistance to any person with limited resources, orphaned or abandoned. It is also home to 250 residents with disabilities. Residents are three years of age to older adults with diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, stroke, and traumatic brain injury. The therapy department within Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro evaluates and treats the residents focused on maximizing functional mobility and improving quality of life.
Please consider donating to assist the team with funding for travel expenses, lodging and equipment. We hope to create opportunities for annual trips to transmit sustainable education and quality of care in Central America.
