The Heineman Foundation of Charlotte, together with Atrium Health, celebrated the opening of a new operating room at Unidad Cirugía Cardiovascular de Guatemala (UNICAR) in Guatemala City.
UNICAR, the only such establishment on the sub-continent of Central America dedicated to cardiac care, was founded with the help of IMO in 1973. It serves as the primary care institution for cardiology and cardiac surgery in Guatemala, as well as a referral center for the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases of neighboring countries.
“It has been a tremendous help. Having a complete new and equipped Operation Room, which allows us to perform more surgeries than ever before. It’s a great collaboration for UNICAR with the International Medical Outreach Program,” stated during the opening ceremony by Dr. Raul Cruz Molina, director of UNICAR.
According to Dr. Francis Robicsek, president of the Heineman Foundation of Charlotte, and Vice President of Atrium Health, “The addition of the new operating room will considerably enhance the capabilities of the institution and significantly decrease the patient waiting period for emergency open heart operations.”
UNICAR dedicated the operating theatre in honor of Dr. Robicsek, in recognition of his over forty years of commitment and dedication to improve health care in Guatemala. Government officials, colleagues, friends and even old patients attended the official event. The donation was made possible by a generous donation from the George W. and Ruth R. Baxter Foundation, and Chiquita Brands who provided transportation of the equipment.
