The International Medical Outreach (IMO) Program, a partnership between Heineman Medical Outreach, Inc. and Atrium Health, has been involved for many years with medical assistance in support of professional and technological advances to countries in need.

From cardiology services to equipment donations for education and sustainable healthcare, our program has helped make the following notable contributions:

  • Co-founded UNICAR (Unidad de Cirugia Cardiovascular de Guatemala), largest heart institute in Central America (Guatemala City)
  • Helped perform and train for first open heart surgeries in Guatemala and Belize, as well as the first heart transplant in Costa Rica
  • Fully equipped Central America’s first children’s burn hospital (San Pedro Sula)
  • Donated more than 6,000 computers to the Technology to Educate project, aimed at improving education in public schools across Guatemala
  • Opened a pro bono communications portal with Guatemala and Belize for educational conferences and consultation with Atrium Health
  • Helped furnish, restore adult and pediatric Intensive Care Units in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua
  • Installed seven cardiac catheterization laboratories throughout Central America
  • Implemented a network of 13 non-invasive cardiac echo stations in Central America and the Caribbean, with more being added
  • Established the first public women’s breast cancer screening unit in Belize
  • Deployed a mobile medical clinic in Nicaragua
